The View's Meghan McCain Melts Down After Sunny Hostin Fact-Checks Her NFL Claim: 'I'm Still Talking!'
“The View” co-host Meghan McCain melted down on Thursday during a conversation about National Football League protests during the national anthem, declaring she was “still talking” when co-host Sunny Hostin offered statistics counter to McCain’s argument.
The panel was discussing President Donald Trump’s remarks Thursday, during which the president appeared to escalate a war of words with the NFL even as owners acquiesced to his demands and forced players to stand during the national anthem.
“You shouldn't be playing,” Trump said Thursday of players who choose to kneel during the ceremony. “You shouldn't be there. Maybe you shouldn't be in the country. You have to stand proudly for the national anthem, and the NFL owners did the right thing if that's what they have done.”
Joy Behar suggested there’s a hypocrisy in Trump’s disdain for protesting NFL players.
“Some people say that dodging the draft five times is un-American,” Behar remarked. “Maybe he shouldn't be in the country.:
Sara Haines explained she’s comfortable with people taking a knee, even as she stands with her hand over her heart, because she’s honoring the flag “to protect all of that and the differences among us.”
“Some people may be kneeling because of their personal experience,” Hostin offered. “Because as I have said many times, this protest is not about the national anthem. This protest is not about the flag.”
“This country terrorizes African-American men at a disproportionate rate than white men,” she added. “If I want to kneel because I don't think America is as great as she can be, I don't think America has lived up to the promise of the flag. That means I am being just as American as you are when you stand in homage to your parents' service.”
Behar wondered why it makes Trump “so angry” when players exercise their First Amendment rights.
“It's a very emotional issue,” McCain said.
Behar argued there are “a lot of emotional issues,” but “there is something about this particular story that makes him furious.”
“I complete disagree with anyone on this table,” McCain said. “I would never be okay with somebody not saluting the flag. 72 percent of Americans thought [Colin] Kaepernick's behavior was unpatriotic.”
“Ninety-Seven percent of African Americans think it’s very patriotic,” Hostin replied.
“I'm still talking!” McCain shot back. “I’m still talking! I’m still speaking!”
“Everybody gets to weigh in on this panel, Meghan,” Behar reminded her, as Whoopi Goldberg kicked off a commercial break.
