NPPC encouraged White House and Congress are working together on Thailand

The National Pork Producers Council is pleased to see Congress and the Trump Administration working together to pressure Thailand into lifting longstanding trade barriers.

NPPC director of international affairs Maria Zieba says the U.S. House of Representatives has followed the lead of the U.S. Trade Representative office by sending a bipartisan letter to the U.S. Ambassador to Thailand calling for the removal of restrictions on U.S. farm products, including pork.

“This is quite interesting that everyone is joining and banding together to push forward and eliminate the ban that we have.”

Congress is threatening to suspend U.S. trade benefits enjoyed by Thailand if it does not respond with reciprocal access.

“It’s a little bit outrageous.  They’ve put up a number of bans and barriers to this trade, and it’s not just one thing (but) a combination of things.”

Zieba cites a study done by Dermot Hayes at Iowa State University that shows the U.S. pork industry would gain about $20 million dollars annually if Thailand ended its ban.
