Summer music and theater classes detailed at Thursday meeting

Wilson Studio offers instruction on improvisation to musical theater

Information about a summer camp in Ruidoso focused on developing the muscial and theaterical talents of aspiring young performers will be available at a session planned for 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 24.

Ellen M. Wilson, a music and theater instructor at Eastern New Mexico University, heads the Wilson Voice and Theater Studio.

The Open House will be New Mexico Insure, 26126 Highway 70 East, Suite 2, Ruidoso, the same building as the classes. Parents can learn more about what Wilson offers and sign up for any classes and camps.  A few students will be singing, providing entertainment throughout the evening.

Wilson said she also has some scholarship money for one of the camps. Scholarship applications will be available to pick up at the open house.

The special areas of study include acting for teens, where participants explore the basics of acting through scene study. Students will develop and perfect scenes by applying various approaches and techniques, Wilson said. Weekly work will include reacting and listening skills, character development, improvisation, partner work, and script analysis. At the end of the eight-week session, students perform in a showcase. Ages are 12 to 17, and two class options are offered, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesdays or 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays.

Acting and improvisation for kids will focus on developing students imagination, creativity and expression through theater/improv games and scene work., Wilson said. Students create characters and learn to trust their instincts, building confidence while making new friends, and developing independent thinking. At the end of the eight-week session, students perform in a showcase. Ages 7 to11, with two class options, 5:15 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., Tuesdays or 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturdays.

The Musical Theater Kids Camp adds singing, movement and make-believe to fun theater games to bring out the Broadway Star within, Wilson said. Each student will learn a solo and at least one ensemble number from a favorite musical. At the end of the four-week session, students perform in a showcase. Ages. 7 to 12, the class meets from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Mondays and Wednesdays.

The summer singing boot camp will provide intensive summer training to kick start a young singer’s abilities.  Performance skills will be honed through solo song preparation and weekly vocal coaching in a masterclass environment, Wilson said. Weekly work will include effective warmups, singing, quickly getting a song performance-ready, song stylization, developing stage presence, and nurturing one’s confidence to sing out and to the back of the house. At the end of the eight-week session, students perform in a showcase. Ages 8 to 17, the class meets from 5:30 pm. tp 7:30 p.m., Thursdays.
