Wisconsin farmers catching up on fieldwork

Most Wisconsin farmers were able to get in the fields last week to try and catch up after a cool and wet beginning of spring.  USDA reporters say just over 5 days were suitable for fieldwork last week with some areas able to till, spread, and seed all week.  Southern Wisconsin was slowed by some weekend rain.

As of Sunday, tillage is 69% finished, 33% of the soybeans are planted, and 56% of corn is planted.  Twenty-one percent of that corn has emerged.  Soybeans are almost on time, as USDA says planting is one day behind and emergence is four days ahead of average.

Sixty-nine percent of the potatoes are in the ground, and many have emerged.

While most Wisconsin farmers are thankful the ground is drying out enough to work the fields, some in the central sands and northwestern regions say they could use a little rain.
