Margin Protection Program signups end June 1st

The President of National Milk Producers Federation says dairy producers are running out of time to consider the restructured Margin Protection Program.

Jim Mulhern says, “We’re trying to get the word out.  People need to get into their county FSA office before June 1 to get signed up, and on that first five million pounds of production, it is definitely one to take a very close look at.”

Mulhern says the new program already has guaranteed payout for February and March for $8.00 coverage on the first five million pounds of milk, and will likely have dividends for April when margins are calculated in about a week.  That’s why he urges farmers to consider signing up.  “We’re pleased with the numbers we’ve seen from USDA announcing sign-up has taken place across the country.  That said, we are trying to get the word out, the message out to producers to look very closely at the changes in the program.”

Again, June 1st is the deadline to sign up for MPP this year, and producers need to visit a local Farm Service Agency office to learn more and sign up.
