Dense fog advisory in effect in southeastern Wisconsin

Visibility could drop to a quarter mile in areas along Lake Michigan, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a dense fog advisory through Tuesday morning.

Lake Michigan surface temperatures of 45 degrees combined with light winds out of the southeast and a humid air mass hovering over the area to produce dense fog.

"It may be dense at times closer to Lake Michigan," said Sarah Marquardt, a National Weather Service meteorologist based in Sullivan. "On Tuesday there won't be as much moisture in place as temperatures rise. That usually helps burn off the fog."

Later Monday evening the fog over Lake Michigan is expected to move inland as light winds shift to the east. The dense fog advisory is for Milwaukee, Sheboygan, Ozaukee, Racine and Kenosha counties.

A jogger runs through the early-morning fog and rain near Discovery World on E. Michigan St. and N. Lincoln Memorial Drive in Milwaukee on Tuesday.

The high temperature in Milwaukee is only expected to reach 50 degrees on Monday, well below the normal high of 67 for this date. That's because clouds are keeping temperatures lower.

There's good news, though. By Wednesday the forecast call for sunny skies and highs in the 70s, possibly into the low 80s further inland from Lake Michigan. But with those higher temperatures, dew points are expected to rise into the lower 60s.

Dew points in the 60s and higher make conditions feel muggy. So while the sun and higher temperatures are welcome, it could also be sticky.

And though this is a bit far in advance, the weather patterns currently show drier weather this weekend and Memorial Day in southeastern Wisconsin.
