On Nov. 6, 1977, the Kelly Barnes Dam burst above Toccoa Falls College in Stephens County, Georgia. The flood waters poured over the falls and swept through the college campus, killing 39 people.

The lake behind the flood was about 100 acres, and wiped away mobile homes and other buildings in its path when it poured over the waterfall.
