PORT WASHINGTON - Two men from Milwaukee were arrested Monday in the shooting of an 18-year-old Port Washington man during an attempted carjacking downtown on Sunday, May 20.

The victim told police he was sitting in his car outside his parents' house on Main Street near Franklin Street at 10:30 p.m. when two men ordered him to get out of the car. When he put the car in gear to flee, one of the men fired several shots at him, said Port Washington Police Captain Mike Keller.

The victim was struck at least once near his shoulder and upper chest. He drove himself to the Police Department seeking help.

He was treated for injuries by paramedics and taken by ambulance to a local hospital. He was later flown to a Milwaukee hospital. Keller said the injuries were not life-threatening.

Keller said the suspects fled the scene on foot. The men were apparently hiding in an apartment above Coca Lena candy shop, 329 N. Franklin St. That's just three blocks from the shooting and one block from the Police Department.

Police learned the whereabouts of the two suspects by speaking to residents and business owners, reviewing surveillance footage from businesses and following up on anonymous tips.

The first suspect, a 21-year-old Milwaukee man, was arrested leaving the Franklin Street apartment at 10:51 a.m.

At 2:05 p.m., the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office Special Response Team used a flash-bang device to enter the apartment. They arrested the second suspect, a 26-year-old Milwaukee man, as well as the woman who rents the apartment.

Keller said police have questioned the woman living in the apartment, but he did not say what her relationship was to the suspects.

Keller said he does not know if the 18-year-old victim knows the two suspects. He said police will re-interview the victim, as well as several witnesses, to see if there is any connection.

Keller said he can't remember the last time there was a shooting in Port Washington.

"It's not something that we ordinarily expect to occur here, but we have to expect these things will happen also," he said. "We are going to investigate it, and get to the bottom of it."
