Milwaukee-born synthpop group GGOOLLDD won artist of the year at the 38th Annual WAMI Awards in Appleton Sunday, celebrating the best Wisconsin music of the past year.

Better late than never.

After a blizzard forced the Wisconsin Area Music Awards to cancel its ceremony April 15, the nonprofit organization recognized the best music from the state at the make-up ceremony Sunday, with two Milwaukee groups among the night's biggest winners.

Milwaukee-born synthpop group GGOOLLDD won artist of the year, after winning song of the year three years ago. Another Milwaukee band won song of the year Sunday: blues band Altered Five, for "Charmed and Dangerous."

Tre Principesse, a group of classical pop vocalists from Green Bay, won album of the year for "Getting to Know You," along with new artist of the year.

Other notable wins for Milwaukee artists include Kyle Megna, who won male vocalist of the year, and alternative rock/rock artist of the year for his group Kyle Megna & the Monsoons; and Abby Jeanne, who won female vocalist of the year.

WAMI held the 38th annual awards at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in Appleton Sunday night.

Inductees into the organization's Hall of Fame this year included blues guitarist and Green Bay native Billy Flynn; Stevie Rachelle, the Oshkosh-born vocalist for glam metal band Tuff; and late trumpet player Bunny Berigan from Hilbert, who performed with Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey and Benny Goodman, and has a 1937 recording, of "I Can't Get Started," in the Grammy Hall of Fame.
