April milk production slightly above a year ago

 

The USDA says milk production in the top 23 states during April 2018 was 17.312 billion pounds, up 0.7% from April 2017. Production per cow was 1,982 pounds, 10 more than a year ago and the highest April average on record for the leading production states, and the number of milk cows was 8.736 million head, an increase of 14,000 from last year.

California remained the top production state at 3.455 billion pounds, mostly because it has the most dairy cows, 1.736 million, followed by Wisconsin, at 2.523 billion pounds and 1.274 million head, respectively, while Michigan and Colorado shared the highest monthly average of 2,210 pounds.

The USDA’s next set of supply and demand estimates, including an updated 2018 milk production projection, is out June 12th.

April 2018 milk production, per cow average, and herd size for applicable Brownfield states:

IL: 167 million pounds, down 0.6% from 2017; average of 1,800 pounds, down 10 from a year ago; herd of 93,000 head, unchanged from last year

IN: 367 million pounds, up 0.8% from 2017; average of 1,690 pounds, up 5 from a year ago; herd of 187,000 head, up 1,000 from last year

IA: 440 million pounds, up 1.6% from 2017; average of 2,000 pounds, up 5 from a year ago; herd of 220,000 head, up 3,000 from last year

MI: 935 million pounds, down 1.4% from 2017; average of 2,210 pounds, down 15 from a year ago; herd of 423,000 head, down 3,000 from last year

MN: 813 million pounds, down 2.2% from 2017; average of 1,790 pounds, down 20 from a year ago; herd of 454,000 head, down 5,000 from last year

OH: 469 million pounds, down 2.5% from 2017; average of 1,825 pounds, down 10 from a year ago; herd of 257,000 head, down 5,000 from last year

SD: 221 million pounds, up 1.8% from 2017; average of 1,840 pounds, down 15 from a year ago; herd of 120,000 head, up 3,000 from last year

WI: 2.523 billion pounds, down 0.6% from 2017; average of 1,980 pounds, down 5 from a year ago; herd of 1.274 million head, down 5,000 from last year
