Farmer says there is low weed and insect pressure because of late spring

A southwestern Indiana farmer says the late start to the planting season might benefit some farmers including himself.

“Since we’re Ohio river bottom farmers, it varies from year to year on when we can roll,” he says. “some years on Memorial Day we’re done and some year we haven’t started so I guess we’re ahead of some years.”

Joe Steinkamp grows corn and soybeans near Evansville and says his corn is about 10 percent planted.

“The corn and soybean fields are fairly free of weeds right now so we’re not drawing any bugs or pests to the field because it’s been such a late spring and that’s a good thing,” he says.

He tells Brownfield he could be done planting in the next two weeks if good conditions continue.
