Michigan asparagus checkoff renewed

Michigan asparagus growers strongly support continuing the state checkoff program for the next five years.

More than ninety percent of votes casts, representing nearly 100 percent the total pounds, voted for it to continue.

The Michigan Asparagus Industry Development Promotion program was created 40 years ago to improve research, promotion and marketing of Michigan asparagus.

Overseen by the Michigan Asparagus Advisory Board, funds are also used to operate the Michigan Asparagus Research Farm.

Growers are currently assessed $0.0175 cents for every pound of asparagus sold.

The first full week of asparagus harvest is underway across key growing regions, with growers in the Southwest slightly delayed because of wet fields.
