NFU calls on USDA for help in farmer suicide crisis

The National Farmers Union is asking the USDA to use its resources to “proactively address” the farm suicide crisis.

Matt Perdue, NFU governmental relations representative, tells Brownfield Ag News, “One of the strengths of the USDA network across the country is the close relationship that they have with farmers and ranchers. That is something that we are trying to leverage, both through FSA but also through Extension.”

He says extension is in the forefront of educating farmers and both FSA and extension workers could help farmers recognize the signs of stress in their neighbors and themselves and point them to resources for coping and seeking help if they need it.

“Farmers and ranchers are a strong bunch and aren’t really always very excited to admit, one, they’re struggling and two, to ask for help.”

NFU also strongly supports the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network in the next farm bill. Matt Perdue tells Brownfield NFU has been in talks with the USDA’s Center for Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.
