NAFTA nations are in talks in DC this week

Leaders from the US, Canada, and Mexico are meeting in DC this week to further negotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has said he wants to reach a new NAFTA deal soon. But, there are still unresolved issues including auto manufacturing in Mexico, which was the focus of talks Monday. The US wants to tighten rules of origin to boost domestic auto manufacturing.

Mexico’s economy minister has said they’ll be in the US as long as necessary this week.

Other issues include Canada’s dairy supply management system and a sunset clause proposed by the U.S. that would kill the deal after five years unless the countries move to extend it.

Leaders from each country continue to express optimism despite acknowledging the short window to reach a deal before upcoming elections in Mexico in July and the US in November.
