Tariff extension granted to EU and NAFTA partners
President Trump has extended his May 1st deadline to decide if the European Union, Canada and Mexico will be permanently exempt from steel and aluminum tariffs.
The administration will have an additional 30 days to make a decision.
Kevin Lawlor with the coalition Americans for Farms and Families tells Brownfield if the U.S. imposes tariffs and the EU and others decide to take retaliatory measures, farmers will be impacted. “As we think about trade policy in this country, people might have a disconnect between what aluminum or steel might have to do with pork or soybeans—but I think what needs to happen is we need to understand that every single decision can impact the American farmer.”
The U.S. has finalized agreements in principle with Argentina, Australia and Brazil.
The European Union has announced a plan of counter-measures if the U.S. imposes tariffs on aluminum and steel imports including tariffs on U.S. steel, peanut butter, cranberries, and orange juice.
