Grassley decries EPA ‘bailing out billionaires’ with RFS waivers

Ethanol supporters are upset over reports that EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt has granted a “hardship waiver” to CVR, an oil refinery owned by billionaire and former Trump adviser Carl Icahn (eye-con).

The waiver allows refiners to bypass their biofuel obligations under the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley had this reaction.

“Hundreds of millions, and in some cases billions, of dollars in profit isn’t my definition of a hardship, contrary to what Pruitt might think,” Grassley says. “Bailing out billionaires isn’t helping ethanol or family farmers.

“I can’t speak to Pruitt’s motives, but it looks like he’s trying to undo the RFS by simply waiving refiners’ obligations. President Trump committed to 15 billion gallons and this is undermining that effort.”

Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor issued a statement, saying the EPA is “taking money out of the pockets of American farmers and undermining President Trump’s promises to rural communities”.
