Action from the Class 3A Regional track and field meet on Thursday at Charlotte High School in Punta Gorda.

The track at Charlotte High School has been a house of horrors for Estero junior Hugh Brittenham over the last few years. Now one of the top mid-distance runners in the country, Brittenham has dealt with heat exhaustion and injuries when running in Punta Gorda.

He was out to change that on Friday at the Region 3A-3 Track and Field Championships. Putting his past at the track behind him, Brittenham won gold in the 800 and 1,600 meters, which sets up an intriguing couple of months as he pushes to run a sub-1:50 800 against elite competition in the state and in the nation.

“It’s a redemption sort of thing,” Brittenham said of overcoming his struggles at Charlotte where he briefly blacked out his freshman year and a hamstring issue prevented him from advancing to state in the 800 as a sophomore. “I just had that one more year of experience.”

Brittenham posted a 1:53.75 in the 800 and 4:23.38 in the 1,600, making him a favorite at the Class 3A state championships May 4-5 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. His performances earlier in the season at the IMG Invitational and the FSU Relays earned him an invitation to the Brooks PR Invitational Meet in June in Shoreline, Washington, which features the nation’s fastest runners.

“A lot of people ask me what it’s like to have the No. 1 time in the country and stuff like that,” Brittenham said. “That’s now how I measure myself. But when I go home and see that invitation to Brooks, that’s the stamp.”
