Skamania County emergency crews worried about busy summer

Four full-time workers respond to emergencies in the southern part of Skamania County.

Big crowds of hikers are expected on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge this summer.

Many of the most popular hikes on the Oregon side are still closed after the massive Eagle Creek Fire last year.

Four full-time workers respond to emergencies in the southern part of Skamania County. They say their territory covers 1,600 square miles. They worry this will be a very busy summer.

“I can just imagine its going to be a pretty wild summer, for rescues any way. I hope not. I hope people are on their best behavior and come prepared and do their thing. But the reality is we're gonna be out there some point,” said Captain Tyson Marquis from Skamania County EMS.

On the Dog Mountain trail, dozens of hikers braved the steep slopes Wednesday.

The parking lot was full before noon.

“I mean, it's a Wednesday and look at how packed this parking lot is!” said Lisa Wehse as she prepared for her hike. “It’s insane. And I think it’s only going to get crazier as the summer goes on, to be honest that's not really fun.”

She is correct. It is likely to get worse.

Captain Marquis urges you to come prepared with extra clothes, food and water. There is little if any cell service on most of the trails. It could be a long time before anyone knows you need help.

The EMS team is so concerned its putting on an 8-hour class June 9 on how to prepare for common remote outdoor medical emergencies.

The cost is $75. It will be held in downtown Stevenson, Washington.
