Mission BBQ, a Maryland-based restaurant chain created as a salute to America, has the town of Brookfield at attention.

The barbecue chain is proposing a 3,385-square-foot re-development of the former Boston Market, which closed in January, for a new restaurant at 18340 W. Bluemound Road.

The town's plan commission recommended conceptual approval during its meeting on April 24.

Keith Henderson, town of Brookfield chairman, said the next step is for the proposal to go to the town board. Henderson said he believes Mission BBQ's plan is to possibly open within 120 days after being approved.

The restaurant has locations all over the nation. In January, plans were announced to open a location in Kenosha. The chain is based in Glen Burnie, Maryland.

Mission BBQ's founders Steve Newton and Bill Kraus first opened the restaurant on Sept. 11, 2011, as a tribute to the men and women who sacrifice their lives for the country. Also the date is fitting as it commemorates the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Every day at noon, employees stand at attention for the national anthem.

"As the founders of Mission BBQ, we strive every day to remind everyone what makes our country great — its heroes," the restaurant's website said.

Besides briskets and ribs, Mission BBQ adds patriotism to their menu. The drink menu offers patrons the opportunity to buy an American Heroes Cup.

If a customer purchases one of these special cups, $2 will be donated to support various nonprofit organizations such as the Honor Flight Network, National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, United Service Organizations and more.

The menu also offers additional meats, sandwiches, salads, and sides.

Patrons can make meals a combo XL, meaning the addition of one side and a drink or XXL, the addition of two sides and a drink. Kids meals are also on the menu.

The town board will review the plan commission’s recommendation at a later date.
