Matt Kenseth, pushed out of the series last year by a lack of sponsorship, will be back this season for a limited run in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, according to an SB Nation story Monday night.

Matt Kenseth celebrates in victory lane after winning the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Can-Am 500.

The 2003 NASCAR champion from Cambridge will return to Roush Fenway Racing – his original Cup Series team – with his first race scheduled for May 12 at Kansas Speedway, according to the report, which cites multiple unidentified sources. He will share the No. 6 Ford with Trevor Bayne, its full-time driver since 2015. Jordan Bianchi, who broke the news, said later on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio that Kenseth would be the primary driver.

Roush Fenway scheduled a “Major NASCAR Partner Announcement” involving the team for Wednesday at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Kenseth responded to a message Tuesday but did not address his plans or the report.

Kenseth, 46, began his Cup career with Roush Racing and drove for the team full time from 2000 through 2012, scoring 24 of his 39 Cup victories, including the 2009 and 2012 Daytona 500s, in the No. 17 Ford.

He moved to Joe Gibbs Racing in 2013, while that team was on the rise and Roush Fenway seemed to be foundering. He won seven race in his first season and a total of 15 in five years.

Gibbs announced last July that 21-year-old Erik Jones would take over the No. 20 Toyota from Kenseth, and Kenseth said late in the season that none of his other options for a competitive ride had come through so he would step away.

Kenseth won his second-to-last start with Gibbs, at Phoenix International Raceway in November, to end the second-longest winless streak of his career, saying, “They don't get much better than that.”
