MADISON – The University of Wisconsin athletic board on Friday approved a standard one-year contract extension for men’s basketball coach Greg Gard, through the 2022-'23 season, and three other coaches.

Gard compiled a 15-8 mark as an interim coach in 2015-’16 after Bo Ryan retired and led UW to a 27-10 mark in his first season as full-time head coach. The Badgers reached the Sweet 16 in each season.

UW could not overcome the loss of four seniors, however, and last season failed to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1998.

The Badgers went 4-6 in their first 10 games and then lost guards D’Mitrik Trice and Kobe King to season-ending injuries.

UW finished 7-11 in Big Ten play and 15-18 overall, with a 63-60 loss to Michigan State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten tournament sealing the team’s NCAA fate.

The board also extended the five-five year contracts of women’s basketball coach Jonathan Tsipis (through May 31, 2023), women’s hockey coach Mark Johnson (through June 30, 2023) and men's hockey coach Tony Granato (through June 30, 2023).
