Giants release Brandon Marshall; GM Dave Gettleman discusses Dez Bryant

New York Giants wide receiver Brandon Marshall (15) catches the ball as Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Vernon Hargreaves (28) tackles during the first half at Raymond James Stadium.

Brandon Marshall's second stint in New York didn't last long.

The New York Giants released the veteran wide receiver with a failed physical designation, general manager Dave Gettleman announced on Thursday.

Marshall, 34, was expected to make be a big part of the Giants' offense as a running mate for Odell Beckham Jr. after being released by the Jets last March. But he played in just five games before undergoing season-ending ankle surgery.

He finished the year with 18 catches for 154 yards. A six-time Pro Bowl selection, Marshall has played for five teams in 12 years.

While the move could create an opening for Dez Bryant, who was released by the Dallas Cowboys last week, Gettleman was non-commital. Bryant previously expressed a desire to play in the NFC East in order to play the Cowboys twice per year, and he told 247sports.com that joining the Giants' offense would be "crazy."

“I’m interested in everybody," Gettleman said. "We’ll see.”
