Perdue answers China concerns at House hearing

Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue assured members of the House Ag Appropriations Subcommittee his authority to use Commodity Credit Corporation funds will help farmers in the event of Chinese trade tariffs, “If we have to have mitigation efforts what you all gave us with the flexibility on the CCC would be one of the authorities that we would look to as well as Section 32 over production or taking food into the schools and other food banks, and things like that.”

Perdue says President Trump is trying to correct what’s wrong with U.S. trade with China, “We allow many of their products to come in virtually tariff-free and yet they still restrict or tariff many of our products in there.”

Perdue says he is the one who suggested doing a reciprocal tariff approach with China and believes now that the U.S. has China’s attention they can, hopefully, negotiate things through to the benefit of farmers and the U.S., as a whole.
