Corn associations collaborating on water quality efforts

State corn associations are coordinating efforts to assess and improve water quality practices being done by farmers.

Rachel Orf with the National Corn Growers Association says members from 11 state associations (including Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio) are sharing what farmers are doing to protect the environment to help speed up progress of successful programs.

She says several states are utilizing the 4-R Plus program to make improvements.  “That’s basically taking the 4-R nutrient stewardship practices plus conservation practices, which in return will improve yields, soil health and water quality.”

She says the water quality group is also working to bring awareness to what farmers are doing to be good stewards by providing current and accurate data to combat misinformation.
