Senators call on EPA to stop issuing hardship waivers

A bipartisan group of U.S. senators is calling on EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt to stop issuing so-called “hardship waivers” to oil refiners.

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley is one of the leaders of the effort.

“These waivers represent a clear violation of Administrator Pruitt’s commitments and undermine President Trump’s long-standing support of the Renewable Fuel Standard”, Grassley says.

The waivers “effectively gut” the overall Renewable Volume Obligations assigned to refiners, Grassley says.

“There’s no other way to view these waivers than as EPA failing to uphold President Trump’s commitment to that promise of annually using 15 billion gallons of ethanol.”

In a conference call with reporters, Grassley called Pruitt “a loose cannon—not carrying out the President’s wishes”.

The senators have asked Pruitt to provide Congress with a list of refiners that have received the waivers.
