Will a new NAFTA deal be reached soon?

Leaders from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico appear optimistic about reaching a new North American Free Trade Agreement soon.

USDA Deputy Ag Secretary Steve Censky told reporters Monday that he believes negotiations will end well.

But, there are some things that need to be addressed including increased market access for U.S. dairy in Canada.

“And as we work in these final weeks and months to finalize  NAFTA, we’re continuing to raise those priories as well,” he says.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also expressed optimism. He recently told reporters that there has been progress and he is hopeful there will be good news coming soon. And Mexico’s economy minister has said there is an 80 percent chance the countries could reach an agreement by May.

There are reports that the timeline for coming to an agreement has accelerated, but President Trump has said there is no rush.

Leaders have been in talks since the last formal renegotiating round.
