Clay Matthews, Davante Adams take over as Packers' softball game hosts

GRAND CHUTE - Clay Matthews and Davante Adams are taking over as hosts of the Green Bay Packers' annual charity softball game at Fox Cities Stadium.

The two stars take over for Jordy Nelson, who was released last month by the Packers and later signed with the Oakland Raiders. The game is June 2.

Tickets for the game went on sale in November. More than 4,000 have been sold and only $29 reserved bleacher and $14 general admission grass seats remain.

What had been named the Jordy Nelson Charity Softball Game will now be called the Green & Gold Charity Softball Game. The format will get a change this year, too, with Matthews and Adams serving as captains and drafting their teams. In past years, players from the offense and players from the defense faced off.

A home run derby will start at 11 a.m. and the game begins at 12:05 p.m.

The annual tradition began in 1994 at Appleton's Goodland Field and was hosted for four years by former defensive back George Teague and, initially, singer Michael Bolton. It moved to Fox Cities Stadium in 1995. 

Brett Favre helped revive the event in 2000 and was the face until leaving the Packers in 2008. Donald Driver then took over for six years before Nelson took it on in 2014.

The game will again benefit the Nelson-backed Young Life, an organization that pairs middle, high school and college students with adults for guidance. The 2017 game raised $130,000.
