Guests at Passports to Wines Around the World, set for April 21 at the Radisson Resort at the Port, will get to sample a variety of food and wine while supporting Aging Matters programs.

Getting a regular passport is a hassle, what with the paperwork and the mug shot that makes you fond of how the DMV portrayed you in your driver’s license.

Thankfully, Aging Matters in Brevard has an alternative that doesn’t require you to fill out forms or get your picture taken.

Passport to Wines Around the World, Aging Matters’ signature fundraiser, embarks you on an enological world cruise where you will sample 14 boutique wines curated by Florida Wine and Spirits and paired with tempting culinary creations by The Kitchen and special guest chefs.

For $125, which is less than the application and acceptance fees for a U.S. passport these days, guests at Passport to Wines Around the World will spend the evening of Saturday, April 21, feeling good, not just because they will be eating and drinking to their heart’s content, but also because they will be supporting a critically needed Brevard nonprofit.

Aging Matters CEO retires; new leader steps in

Since 1965, Aging Matters in Brevard has helped maximize independence, dignity and quality of life for the elderly and disabled of Brevard. Its best known service may well be Meals on Wheels, which annually prepares and delivers approximately 200,000 meals to more than 1,500 home-bound seniors.

Among other programs the agency offers is Seniors at Lunch, which operates 11 neighborhood lunch sites for seniors. Aging Matters’ The Kitchen also feeds seniors attending adult daycare centers and at risk-children through the Brevard County Parks and Recreation Summer Lunch Program.

Additional services include Sunflower House, a senior and caregiver resource center inside Merritt Square Mall; help at home with light housekeeping, laundry and minor home maintenance; the RSVP program, which matches adults 55 and older with volunteer opportunities throughout the community, and Senior TranServe for transporting seniors to errands and medical appointments.

Passport to Wines Around the World provides a significant source of revenue for the agency.

“Last year, it raised $130,000,” said Sherri Law, director of development. “We had over 400 guests enjoying wonderful wine and food.”

The wining and dining will again be outstanding this year, the 11th for the fundraiser.

“We’ll have boutique wines such as Juan Gil Silver Label from Spain and Aviary cabernet sauvignon from the Napa Valley,” said Law.

As far as the grazing goes, the food will be plentiful, thanks to The Kitchen’s chefs, who will be assisted by chefs from Courtenay Springs Village, Keiser University, River View Senior Resort and Victoria Landing Assisted Living & Memory Care. Guests can expect goodies such as Brussels sprout sliders with homemade corned beef, brie and sweet glazed onions and Sansho pepper-crusted tuna with avocado mayonnaise, among many others.

The evening also includes entertainment by the Tree Frogs, balloon pop prizes and a live auction with auctioneer Sheriff Wayne Ivey.

If you could use a mini-vacation, reserve your “Passport” now, for tickets go quickly.
