Lady Vols signee Jazmine Massengill lights up over moment at McDonald's game

ATLANTA - Jazmine Massengill heard that she made a good impression at the McDonald's All-American girls basketball game.

The Tennessee signee got an earful from the crowd at Philips Arena. They passed judgement with the "ooohs" that rolled down in the third quarter Wednesday night when Massengill executed a step-through, floating drive to the basket.

"That was lit," she said, smiling. "They really liked that move.

"It was a great feeling to know people come out there supporting me. My friends and family were out there."

Two of her future teammates were there on the court with her as part of the annual all-star game. Forward Amira Collins played with Massengill on the East team. Collins scored a conventional three-point play moments after checking in during the first quarter. She snagged a pair of rebounds and had a steal.

Guard Zarielle Green, the third Lady Vols signee, had the biggest statistical impact of the trio. She scored six points, grabbed three rebounds and gathered four steals for the West, which won 82-79.

Some of her assists when to fellow guard Christyn Williams. The Connecticut signee was the game's most outstanding player, scoring 22 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

Green started the game and immediately stood out by running the floor. The 6-footer scored two of her baskets early in transition, running out after a turnover and later after a missed shot.

"Running the floor, it brings energy to the game," Green said. "I think it helps me to play better defense and also put points on the board."

All three Lady Vols signees stood out in this manner. Massengill's other basket came after she pulled down a rebound and on the dribble outraced everyone up the floor and scored at the rim.

With an eye toward the future, Collins said: "If we keep on pushing and pushing, a lot of teams get tired."

Massengill, who had four points, an assist and a block, also attempted to direct traffic from the point guard spot, a difficult undertaking in a game of this nature.

"It's hard to get into the flow of the game," she said. "But everything is good."

Massengill returned to her hometown of Chattanooga afterward and Thursday was flying to New York to play in the GEICO High School Basketball Nationals this weekend with her high school team, Hamilton Heights Christian Academy.

Hamilton Heights is ranked No. 1 in the espnW 25 power rankings.

"We definitely have an opportunity to win a national championship,'' she said. "I feel like this team we have now can definitely get it done."

Massengill, Collins and Green all will be in Brooklyn, N.Y. on April 8 to play in the Jordan Brand Classic.

Green gets acquainted

Green was playing catch-up in terms of knowing Collins and Massengill. She put the time together with them in Atlanta to good use.

"It helped a lot," she said. "We got a lot closer."

Close enough for Green to form some impressions of her future teammates.

"They're goofy and funny," she said. "We fit perfect. We're like the three musketeers."
