Smoke detectors distributed by Milwaukee Fire Department not among those being recalled

The Milwaukee Fire Department said Friday the smoke detectors it distributes to residents are not among the models affected by a recall.

Kidde is recalling dual-sensor smoke alarm models PI2010 and PI9010.

Fire safety product maker Kidde is recalling about 452,000 smoke alarms in the U.S. and 40,000 in Canada that could be faulty. The company says a yellow cap potentially left on smoke detectors during production could cover a sensor and prevent it from detecting smoke.

The recall affects the Kidde dual-sensor smoke alarm models PI2010 and PI9010. If the date code printed on the back of the alarm falls between Sept. 10, 2016, and Oct. 13, 2017, the model is affected.

"The Milwaukee Fire Department does not, nor ever has, distributed these models to residents," the department said in news release.

But it advised residents to check their homes to see if they have the models. People with the affected models can contact Kidde for a replacement at (800) 880-6788 or go to www.kidde.com/home-safety/en/us

Milwaukee residents who don't have a smoke detector can request one from the Fire Department. Call the Smoke Alarm Hotline at (414) 286-8980. The department will come to residences and install the detectors.
