PETA rebukes Rangers pitcher Martin Perez for killing, eating bull

Martin Perez went 13-12 with a 4.82 ERA last season for the Texas Rangers.

There's yet another chapter in the offseason story of Texas Rangers pitcher Martin Perez and a bull on his ranch in Venezuela.

Perez fractured his elbow in December when the bull made a move in his holding pen that startled Perez and caused him to fall.

The left-hander had surgery, but has since returned to the mound. After his first spring start on Sunday, he let reporters know what happened to the bull.

"“I killed him and I ate him,” Perez said. "It was good meat.”

That got the attention of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The animal rights group sent out a press release calling Perez's actions "vengeful" and sent him a package of vegan treats.

"We hope that upon reflection, you'll feel that making a show of eating him was not only a cruel thing to do but also an unjustifiable, vengeful act that makes you look small," PETA wrote. "Bulls are surely worthy of respect and admiration."

So far Perez has yet to respond -- and this is probably where the saga will end.

However, it does add an interesting subplot if Perez should ever end up facing Baltimore Orioles designated hitter Pedro "El Toro" Alvarez at some point during the upcoming season.
