Monsanto partners with gene editing start-up

Monsanto is investing $100 million in an ag start-up to advance gene-editing technology.

California-based Pairwise has licensed DNA base editing technology from Harvard University and will use the new gene-editing technology to address global food challenges.

Pairwise founder Keith Joung says base editing technology has the potential to have an enormous impact on the speed and precision plant scientists can improve crops.

The collaboration will give Monsanto exclusive rights to corn, soybean, wheat, cotton and canola edited plants. Pairwise would be able to partner with more companies on technology developed for other crops including fruits and vegetables.

Pairwise is an independent startup supported by Monsanto Growth Ventures.
