Michigan gubernatorial candidates say keep Right to Farm

Five of the 19 candidates running for governor echoed their support of Michigan’s Right to Farm Act an Ag Forum this week.

Michigan’s Right to Farm legislation protects farmers from nuisance lawsuits. All candidates said they want to see it continued.

Brian Calley says he believes in the legislation, “Totally, completely, 100 percent supportive of Right to Farm, I think this is one of the fundamentals of the success in our state.”

Patrick Colbeck says, “I’m a big advocate of people being able to use property as they see fit and let the free market dictate.”

Jim Hines says, “It made it such that those zone changes would not shut down the farmer and would not lead to lawsuits—I’ve very open to that, I’m positive.”

Abdul El-Sayed says, “The responsibility I think we have is to, number one, stand up for Right to Farm—I think it’s really important. But, number two, be working with local communities on how we establish best practices.”

Shri Thanedar says, “I am fully, 100 percent supportive of Right to Farm.”

Other topics covered included animal agriculture, incentives for young farmers, ethanol, natural resources, environmental stewardship and regulations, among others.

Michigan Farm Bureau will be hosting an ag forum with candidates after the August primaries.
