Wisconsin Ag Chairman not seeking re-election

Wisconsin Assembly Ag Committee Chairman Lee Nerison

Wisconsin Assembly Ag Committee Chairman Lee Nerison is retiring.

Nerison told Brownfield earlier this month he would talk to his family before deciding whether or not to run for office again.  “My daughters are married now after I got started down here and six grandkids and they’re starting to get involved, so I have to sit down with them and have one last talk before I make my mind up.”  After having that talk, Nerison chose not to run for re-election.

The Westby, Wisconsin Republican says he’s disappointed that a couple of issues important to agriculture didn’t get resolved in this session.  “In the budget, there was (money) put in there to do a study to move the ag siting from DNR over to DATCP, and they did a study committee on that and they were going through that, and I would have liked to have maybe gotten that done, too.”

Nerison supports moving CAFO siting from DNR to the ag department.  “So many times, DNR or DATCP will go out and tell the farmer he’s got to do this, and then all of the sudden DNR comes out and says no, y0u’ve got to tear it all out and do this.  Well, let’s get them on the farm at the same time and decide which is the best way to go so they only have to do it once.”

He says they ran out of time in this session for the Assembly and the Senate to properly deal with it.  He tells Brownfield he also wanted to see additional road money for local governments in the budget.

Lee Nerison represented most of Crawford, Vernon, and Monroe counties for the past 14 years.
