What Sister Jean told Loyola before upsetting Tennessee

Michelle R. Martinelli

Sister Jean has become the most universally beloved fan during this year's NCAA tournament.

The 98 year old - whose full name is Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt - is the chaplain for Loyola's basketball team, and she helps guide them into every game with a prayer and offers compliments and constructive criticism via email afterward as well.

She has repeatedly asserted her faith in the No. 11 seed Ramblers, who cruised to two upsets in their first trip to the NCAA tournament in 33 years - both with the intensity that is so quintessential to March.

They first knocked off No. 6 seed Miami in the first round of the tournament Thursday and then pulled off another incredible upset Saturday by taking down No. 3 seed Tennessee off a game-winning jumper from Clayton Custer with seven seconds left. Loyola - which is in Chicago - won, 63-62.

So what did Sister Jean tell the Loyola players before the game? In her pregame prayer that often combines faith and a scouting report, she said:

"Don't let those Tennessee team members scare you with their height. Height doesn't mean that much. You're good jumpers. You're good rebounders. You're good at everything, and just keep that in mind."

Wise words that turned out to be true from the longtime basketball fan who knows what she's talking about. However, she also revealed her personal bracket has Loyola losing in the Sweet 16, but, like anyone in sports, she's taking this one game at a time.
