Police are investigating a fatal shooting that took place Saturday night on the west side, less than a block from one of the city's iconic landmarks, in an incident that appears to have left a second person critically wounded.

A man was shot and killed on Tremont Street, just south of 16th Street and steps away from Long's Bakery. People on the street who heard multiple gunshots took shelter inside the shop, known for its fresh baked doughnuts and cakes.

After police received the call, around 7:30 p.m., a second man showed up at IU Health Methodist Hospital with a gunshot wound, saying he, too, had been shot outside the bakery, said Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Capt. Michael Elder. He couldn't definitively say the two shootings were connected.

The second man remains at the hospital in critical condition.

Elder said police did not yet have a positive identification of the shooting victims. The dead man was described as a male, who appeared to be in his early 30s. No suspect was in custody.

As homicide investigators arrived, the crime area took on a surreal aspect.

Patrons continued to weave their way around the police vehicles, their lights glaring, and the news vans, to enter Long's to purchase bags and boxes of doughnuts. Even as, across the street from the store, a dead man lay on the sidewalk, the toes of his shoes pointing towards the sky.
