Camp report: Wade Miley roughed up, but Brewers hold on to beat Reds

On the field: Seeking to solidify his spot with the Milwaukee Brewers, Wade Miley instead turned in his worst start of the spring Friday in an eventual 16-13 Brewers victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Goodyear Ballpark.

Miley was tagged for 10 hits, seven runs and a walk to go with three strikeouts in a three-inning outing. One of the hits was a booming home run to left by opposing starter Michael Lorenzen.

Miley's performance came on the heels of a clunker by Brent Suter — not great timing for either of the two guys who were believed to be leading the race for the two open spots in the starting rotation.

"It was just one of those days," said Miley, who is on a minor-league deal and will need to be told by the Brewers by March 22 whether he'll be on the opening-day roster. "You just try to find some positives, correct the negatives, then flush it and move on. You can't read too much into it. Obviously it's not the best time for this, but it's baseball.

"It's going to happen."

Said manager Craig Counsell: "They did square some balls up. There were six balls on the ground that got through also. I think you have to evaluate everything, evaluate the whole spring. That's how you do it."

The Brewers used a seven-run sixth to get back into the game and then scored six more over the final three innings to pull it out. Ji-Man Choi slugged his third spring homer to start the seven-run rally, and Nick Franklin went deep in the seventh.

Cactus juice: As they have done in recent springs, the Brewers will celebrate St. Patrick's Day on Saturday at Maryvale Baseball Park by sporting green jerseys and hats. Even their batting helmets will feature green ball-and-glove logos, a small but detail-oriented touch arranged by equipment manager Jason Shawger.
