Plant ’17 returns

An ag meteorologist is calling for a cool, wet start to the planting season.

“I think we’re looking at delays and cold soils as well, especially with limited sunshine, frequent wet weather that’s anticipated and wouldn’t be surprised if we have some very significant late seasons snows.”

Greg Soulje  says the significant rains that moved through the Southern Lakes Region and parts of the Corn Belt have left the ground saturated which could mean flooding similar to last year’s planting season.  “Probably almost a repeat of what we saw in areas of the Heartland last year with maybe a little more expansion into parts of the Central and Southern Corn Belt.”

He says the National Weather Service’s spring outlook is a little too aggressive on warmer weather.  “We expect around, at least from our estimates, a very cool if not cold April, gradually turning to more seasonal temperatures in May.”

Soulje says the Eastern Corn Belt is also geared to face some drought conditions later this summer.
