Michigan apple growers vote on checkoff

The Michigan Department of Agriculture is conducting a referendum to see if apple growers want to continue the state checkoff for the next five years.

The Michigan Apple Advertising and Promotion program was created to improve research, promotion and marketing of Michigan apples.

Growers have until March 30th to return their ballots to the department.

Producers are assessed 52 cents for every 100 pounds of fresh apples sold, 28 cents for apples sold for processing and 12 cents on apples sold for juice. The assessment includes four cents for research and up to three cents per hundredweight for promotion with the U.S. Apple Association.

More than half of the votes casts, representing more than half of the total bushels, must approve the checkoff for it to be continued.
