Tiger Tracker: Tiger Woods shot-by-shot recap of his Even-par 72

Tiger Woods battled to an Even-par 72 on Friday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational to keep himself in contention but seven back.

We tracked Woods’ second round shot by shot. Catch up with what you may’ve missed…

Hole No. 18: Par 4, 458 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (5:41 p.m. ET): Tiger with a stinger 3-wood down the left side of the fairway, and this is one of his best drives today. It’s perfect and rolls out some 40 yards down that left side of the fairway. So it gets well down there and he has a great angle to a back-right flag.
  • APPROACH SHOT (5:47 p.m. ET): That was a 323-yard drive from TW. With a 3-wood. Wow. Anyway, he could take advantage with less than 150 yards in and does. This ball lands some 20 feet left of the hole, but he did that on purpose and played the slope. The ball trickles closer, and it looks like he’ll have 15 feet for birdie for a 1-under 71.
  • ON THE GREEN (5:52 p.m. ET): Ohhhhh … agonizing. Tiger touched that 15-footer down there and it took the right-to-left break late, hit the right edge of the cup with die speed and lipped out. Almost a beautiful closing birdie for a 1-under 71, but maybe two inches off from that. Anyway, Woods managed to post 72 on a day when he just didn’t have it. Overall, an impressive battle. Stats: 8/14 fairways, 10/18 GIR, 26 putts

  • TIGER ON THE DAY: Even-par 72 (-4 overall, T-17)

Hole No. 17: Par 3, 201 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (5:29 p.m. ET): A 6-iron for Tiger and this is an aggressive line left of the front-left pin and this turns out all right. His ball lands about 10 feet left and pin-high, but runs some 15 feet to the back fringe. Looks like about 25 feet left for birdie.
  • ON THE GREEN (5:36 p.m. ET): That one looked good at the start, but it veered right in the middle and finished a few inches low. Once again, great speed though, so a tap-in par. Tiger can somehow post a sub-par round if he birdies 18.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 17 (-4 overall, T-16)

Hole No. 16: Par 5, 497 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (5:09 p.m. ET): Tiger goes with driver on a very simple par 5, and it’s not very good. That one misses the fairway right by 15 yards. It actually misses the bunkers, finishing in the rough right of them. His second shot will depend on the lie and if he has tree troubles. If his lie is OK and he has a path, he can certainly still go for this one in two.
  • APPROACH SHOT (5:16 p.m. ET): Oh was that some good stuff. Tiger had to get after that one from a tough lie in the rough, and he did. This ball flies about 15 feet beyond this right-front pin, and what a shot. It lands soft and the ball just trickles a yard into the fairway. But he can putt that and should have about 25 feet for eagle after gouging this from a difficult lie. Tiger looked PUMPED about this shot.
  • AROUND THE GREEN (5:25 p.m. ET): It looked like a well-struck putt, but it just leaked right. Perfect speed, though, from just off the green, and he’ll tap in for birdie from inches away.
  • ON THE GREEN (5:26 p.m. ET): Yep, easy birdie. Tiger cleans up, and that’s just what he needed. Back to even par today.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 16 (-4 overall, T-17)

Hole No. 15: Par 4, 467 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (4:52 p.m. ET): Tiger goes iron off the tee, and it’s a good one down the left side. The ball trickled into the intermediate cut, but that is still a drive to like.
  • APPROACH SHOT (4:56 p.m. ET): Tiger got aggressive with that one from 190 yards and that could be costly. The ball flies left of the front-left flag in a greenside bunker. He is short-sided and will have a tough up and down upcoming.
  • AROUND THE GREEN (5:03 p.m. ET): Wow, that was an awful break. The ball flew to the edge of the bunker and plugged there. With an awful lie and a weird stance with the ball on the edge of the bunker, all Tiger can do is blast out some 20 feet beyond the hole. He’ll have to drain that for par.
  • ON THE GREEN (5:05 p.m. ET): This man has no quit. Tiger drains the 20-footer for par. What an important save as that ball dives in the left side. With an easy par 5 coming up, a bogey would’ve stung. An especially impressive par from a brutal lie. Bravo, Tiger.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 15 (-3 overall, T-21)

Hole No. 14: Par 3, 215 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (4:38 p.m. ET): Tiger goes 5-iron off the tee here, and he reaches the green … barely. That’s on the front edge, and he’ll have about 50 feet remaining for his birdie.
  • ON THE GREEN (4:47 p.m. ET): Tiger lags his first putt 5 feet short but gets the comebacker to drop in the right side. That’s a big par.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 14 (-3 overall, T-19)

Hole No. 13: Par 4, 365 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (4:22 p.m. ET): Tiger takes iron off the tee again, and this one is a good one down the left side of the fairway. He’ll have a good look in.
  • APPROACH SHOT (4:25 p.m. ET): OK, from 106 yards, this is a time to get aggressive. And Tiger’s distance control today has been poor. He tried to go just right of the flag and did, but this carried some 10-15 feet too far at least. The ball lands about 20 feet beyond the green and trickles a couple yards off the green into the fairway left and long of the green. He’ll have a chip or putt from some 30 feet. Not what you want from roughly 100 yards in.
  • AROUND THE GREEN (4:31 p.m. ET): Tiger went putter here, and it was good speed, but the ball was about a foot right. Good speed means a simple tap-in is coming, though.
  • ON THE GREEN (4:32 p.m. ET): Yep, Tiger is in with par. Nothing lost there, but he didn’t really give himself a chance at birdie despite being roughly 100 yards away in the fairway for his second. That’s not ideal.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 13 (-3 overall, T-19)

Hole No. 12: Par 5, 574 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (4:03 p.m. ET): Tiger takes driver out here, and this one is a beauty down the right side of the fairway. This is a long par 5, so his ability to reach this in two is unclear. The ball was a good ways down there, so we’ll see.
  • APPROACH SHOT (4:08 p.m. ET): OK, yeah, Tiger could go for this in two. A 323-yard drive left him 254 yards, and he should be in business. This one goes a bit left and trickles a yard beyond the green. Overall, though, he should have a 40-foot eagle putt from just off the green. Maybe we’ll get our first birdie of the day.
  • AROUND THE GREEN (4:15 p.m. ET): Tiger cozies this putt within two feet, and we’ll have our first birdie of the day.
  • ON THE GREEN (4:20 p.m. ET): And we’re on the board! Tap-in, and Tiger has his first birdie of the round.

  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 12 (-3 overall, T-19)

Hole No. 11: Par 4, 438 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (3:49 p.m. ET): Tiger goes iron off the tee again, and it’s a good one down the left side. Lands harmlessly in the fairway.
  • APPROACH SHOT (3:53 p.m. ET): Tiger isn’t shying away. He’s right at the flag on this one, but he goes a little long. He’ll have 18 feet for birdie from the back fringe. Another decent look. He needs to capitalize on something!
  • AROUND THE GREEN (3:59 p.m. ET): That was just not ever close. It was a foot left the whole way, and it ends up 3 feet by the hole. The par effort coming back is no issue, but that was just a weak birdie effort.
  • ON THE GREEN (3:45 p.m. ET): This was actually 18 feet, and the ball slides under the hole and runs 3 feet by. The remainder is no problem, but he remains birdie-less today. He’s nine off the lead.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 over thru 11 (-2 overall, T-28)

Hole No. 10: Par 4, 384 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (3:31 p.m. ET): An iron off the tee on the short par 4, and he stared at it for a long time because it ended up in a fairway bunker left. After a rough front-nine, that’s not what Tiger needed here.
  • APPROACH SHOT (3:37 p.m. ET): Tiger did have a good lie and angle from that bunker from 156 yards, and … this is a nice one that finishes pin-high and 15 feet left of the flag. After a mediocre drive, he has a pretty good birdie look.
  • ON THE GREEN (3:45 p.m. ET): This was actually 18 feet, and the ball slides under the hole and runs 3 feet by. The remainder is no problem, but he remains birdie-less today. He’s nine off the lead.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 over thru 10 (-2 overall, T-24)

Hole No. 9: Par 4, 460 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (3:14 p.m. ET): Tiger takes out driver … and he ROASTS it. He immediately loves this one that goes down the right side. It looks like this one may’ve just snuck in the intermediate cut, but that’ll do very well regardless.
  • APPROACH SHOT (3:18 p.m. ET): After a great drive in which Tiger’s ball is kind of in the fairway and kind of in the intermediate, he had 150 yards to this right pin. And this is another bailout. This ball goes left and ends up some 50 feet left of the cup. Long birdie bid upcoming.
  • ON THE GREEN (3:25 p.m. ET): Tiger left himself 60+ feet, and wow, he rammed that putt some 12 feet by onto the fringe. And his comebacker looks like a solid stroke, but it just misses left. He taps in for bogey, but that’s a rough 2-over 38 to start his round. Stats: 4/7 fairways, 4/9 GIR and 13 putts
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 over thru 9 (-2 overall, T-23)

Hole No. 8: Par 4, 463 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (2:58 p.m. ET): Tiger goes with iron again, and this one finds the right side of the fairway. This par 4 is decently long, so he’ll have plenty in on this shot.
  • APPROACH SHOT (3:02 p.m. ET): Tiger stays aggressive from 191 yards, launching this right over the flag at No. 8. The ball lands about 12 feet beyond the cup and releases to the back fringe. He’ll have about 18 feet left for birdie. Tiger seems frustrated, he seemed to like that shot and misjudged the distance just enough to not get the ball close.
  • ON THE GREEN (3:07 p.m. ET): Oh that was tough to watch. A good putt that was tracking toward the left side of the cup, but it hits there with enough speed for a violent lip out. He actually sneaks in his 3-foot combacker for par, but it drops on the right side. Man, though, that would’ve been a nice birdie.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 8 (-3 overall, T-20)

Hole No. 7: Par 3, 199 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (2:48 p.m. ET): That tee shot from TW was just OK. The ball is pin-high and finds the green, but he’s 45 feet left of the cup. A long birdie putt upcoming. Then again, he made a 71-footer here yesterday.
  • ON THE GREEN (2:54 p.m. ET): That’s a solid lag from Tiger, as his ball comes up about 2.5 feet short. He knocks in the remainder for a solid two-putt par.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 7 (-3 overall, T-19)

Hole No. 6: Par 5, 552 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (2:30 p.m. ET): Tiger goes with driver on this tee shot and comes out of it. Remember, this is the hole that horseshoes around a lake. He goes right of his target, and that means he’s in the right fairway bunker rather than the fairway. He’ll likely lay up from there.
  • SECOND SHOT (2:36 p.m. ET): Tiger indeed lays up. He does beautifully right into the fairway. Another wedge third coming.
  • THIRD SHOT (2:40 p.m. ET): A pretty good one there. Tiger goes for the pin but comes up 10 feet short. Right on line and a good birdie look from about 10 feet upcoming.
  • ON THE GREEN (2:44 p.m. ET): This one from 12 feet never had a chance. It was always low and left. The ball finishes a foot away, so it’s a tap-in par. But Tiger pars both par 5s and is falling back on a day when red numbers are out there.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 6 (-3 overall, T-18)

Hole No. 5: Par 4, 390 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (2:13 p.m. ET): Tiger goes iron off the tee here and this is another pretty one down the middle. This should be a wedge or short-iron and could be a much-needed birdie opportunity.
  • APPROACH SHOT (2:17 p.m. ET): Tiger goes really conservative here. Pin was tucked left, but he only had 144 yards in. But he plays this one about 30 feet right of the hole, and that’s what he’ll have remaining for birdie. By the way, this is Tiger’s first GIR today.
  • ON THE GREEN (2:22 p.m. ET): A good run at it, but this one just misses on the high left side. The ball trickles a foot beyond the cup and Tiger taps in for par.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 5 (-3 overall, T-17)

Hole No. 4: Par 5, 557 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (1:54 p.m. ET): Tiger is fortunate to be OK after a putrid tee shot. He goes driver and slams his club into the ground after his follow through. His ball went way right, on the verge of going out of bounds, but the ball hits the inside of the OB net and ricochets a touch left. He stays in bounds and is harmlessly in the rough. It’s likely a lay-up, but this could’ve been way worse.
  • SECOND SHOT (2 p.m. ET): Tiger hits a bit of a punch on this lay up, and that’s well done. He puts this right back in the fairway, and he’ll have a wedge third.
  • THIRD SHOT (2;02 p.m. ET): From 110 yards, Tiger went at this pin but misjudged the distance. The ball ends up in the fringe about 20 feet beyond the hole and stays there. A few feet shorter and Tiger may’ve been able to spin this one back close.
  • AROUND THE GREEN (2:06 p.m. ET): That was a downhill putt from the fringe and Tiger had to be delicate. The putt misses left and rolls by, but only by a couple of feet. Should be a tap-in for par.
  • ON THE GREEN (2:10 p.m. ET): Yep, that’s a par. Not ideal on a par 5, but again his tee shot could’ve been OB.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 4 (-3 overall, T-17)

Hole No. 3: Par 4, 443 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (1:38 p.m. ET): Tiger goes iron off the tee here, and this one is a lot better. It’s right down the middle of the fairway. He’ll have a good length coming in, but he will do so from the fairway. Much better than yesterday’s OB.
  • APPROACH SHOT (1:45 p.m. ET): Tiger is just totally out of sync. He flares this one from 165 yards, and that’s really bad with a right pin. This one finishes right of the right greenside bunker, and Tiger has a devilish short-sided shot upcoming.
  • AROUND THE GREEN (1:47 p.m. ET): That’s pretty good work from over there. Tiger goes high on that shot, and it lands in the fringe and then releases about 6 feet beyond the cup. As we said, this was a difficult shot. So well played. And he has a good leave for par.
  • ON THE GREEN (1:52 p.m. ET): That 6-footer was solid. It crept right at the end, but it caught the right side of the cup and dropped. A huge par save, especially with two par 5s coming in his next three.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 3 (-3 overall, T-19)

Hole No. 2: Par 3, 226 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (1:27 p.m. ET): This one is not ideal, either. The ball comes up short of the green. It looks like it avoided the bunker, but he’ll need a nice up and down to avoid a bogey-bogey start.
  • AROUND THE GREEN (1:31 p.m. ET): OK, there we go. Tiger hits a nifty pitch. He lands the ball about 10 feet short of the cup and let’s it roll within two. He’ll have a tap-in remaining. A nice par save.
  • ON THE GREEN (1:34 p.m. ET): Tiger taps in. Important par.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 2 (-3 overall, T-18)

Hole No. 1: Par 4, 448 yards

  • OFF THE TEE (1:11 p.m. ET): An iron off the tee … and Tiger hooks it into the woods left. That’s not a promising start at all. We’ll see what he has coming in, but Tiger has to be disappointed with that opening swing.
  • SECOND SHOT (1:13 p.m. ET): Tiger’s drive only went 191 yards and was in trouble. He essentially had to pitch out sideways, which he did. He’ll have a shot of about 200 yards for his third. Rough start.
  • THIRD SHOT (1:16 p.m. ET): The odds of an opening par look slim. Tiger goes for the front pin here and comes up just short. He’s on the front fringe about 20 feet from the cup. He’ll need to hole that to save par.
  • ON THE GREEN (1:20 p.m. ET): Not a bad roll on that one, but it was always a bit left. The ball trickles by on the left side. Tiger marked, but he had about 18 inches left and tapped in. But that’s an opening bogey.
  • TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 over thru 1 (-3 overall, T-19)
