Allen Park — The Detroit Lions announced the signing of free agent guard Kenny Wiggins Thursday afternoon. Terms of the contract were not immediately known.

Wiggins has spent the past three seasons with the Chargers, starting 16 games at right guard last season. Assuming the Lions move Graham Glasgow to center next season, Wiggins would likely compete for a starting job at left guard.

The Chargers led the NFL in passing offense last season, averaging 277 yards per game, all while surrendering a league-low 18 sacks.

Still, analytics site Pro Football Focus frowned on Wiggins’ individual performance, grading him 70th among 77 qualifying guards. They credited him with allowing just three sacks, but 41 total pressures on the quarterback, second-worst among all guards.

Wiggins played for Lions offensive line coach Jeff Davidson in 2016, who was serving in the same role with the Chargers in 2016.
