Farmer says RIN cap defeats the purpose

A leader with Indiana Farm Bureau says farmers and ethanol producers can compete at the pump, but only if the Renewable Fuel Standard is left untouched.

Jeff Gormong farms in southwestern Indiana and says there is a reason ag groups are coming together to support the RFS and oppose the proposed cap on RIN prices.

“It’s use of our crop we grow, but also it cuts down on our dependence of foreign oil, which is a concern for all of us,” he says.

He tells Brownfield the proposed 10-cent cap on RIN prices by Texas Senator Ted Cruz is not a win-win.

“The whole RINs issue the way it was set up, was to encourage companies to invest in the infrastructure so that they can blend more ethanol,” he says. “And for them to try to get out of RINs or cap the RINs defeats the purpose of them in the first place.”

Gormong spoke to Brownfield at the Indiana Farm Bureau spring conference in Indianapolis.
