USA TODAY Sports
Paralympic snowboarder Amy Purdy won bronze at the 2014 Sochi Games.

Amy Purdy, who competed on Dancing with the Stars in 2014, and teammate Brenna Huckaby added to the U.S. medal haul at the Paralympics in Pyeongchang.

Huckaby won gold and Purdy took silver in the LL2 classification of women's snowboard-cross on Monday. It was the first Paralympic medal for Huckaby. Purdy added to her bronze from the Sochi Paralympics.

Purdy, a double amputee, had battled health issues in the lead-up to the Games. She was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, which is a condition that results in the breakdown of muscle tissue, in her arms. Purdy wrote on Instagram that she also suffered from brachial neuritis, which made her arms burn like fire. The condition caused numbness, weakness and muscle atrophy in her arms.

In the men's competition Monday, U.S. flag bearer Mike Schultz won gold, beating defending world champion Chris Vos from the Netherlands in the LL1 final. Schultz, who owns a company that designs prosthetics for snowboarders, wrapped up the season titles in snowboard-cross and banked slalom last month.

American Keith Gabel added his second Paralympic medal, winning silver in the LL2 final. Noah Elliott and Mike Minor also won bronze, bringing the total for U.S. snowboarders to six. The banked slalom event will be held Friday.

The United States led the overall medal count with 15 total followed by France and Ukraine with nine each.
