Get a taste of international arts and culture with Up With People

FLORIDA TODAY Staff
Up with People is an educational organization focused on arts and culture with a mission to volunteer.

Uplifting, upstanding and up-and-comers: That's high praise for the young folks of Up with People, an educational organization that promotes global education and performing arts.

And when they visit a town — about 100 people from 20 different countries — they bring lots of helping hands. As part of their mission, they volunteer 1,000 hours for a local charity.

The students, who hail from Bermuda, Taiwan, Sweden, Belgium and Argentina, to name a few places, stay with host families to get a taste of another culture. Up with People will stop in Brevard on March 12-19, followed by Vero Beach on March 19-26.

During their stay, they learn the ins and outs of putting on a show — singing, dancing and performing.

And with all that hard work, they cap it off with a show.

The shows are planned March 16 and 17 in Melbourne and March 22 and 23 in Vero Beach.

Jericó Oliva of Buenos Aires, Argentina, is part of the 2018 Up with People group.

International recipe

Part of Up with People involves learning about other cultures. Jericó Oliva of Argentina is one of the 105 international cast members that will be visiting Brevard County from March 12-19. She wanted to share a recipe for Empanadas Argentinas.

"I’m not usually a good cook, but this dish is so good that it's worth for me trying to do it," she says.

The dough

500 g flour

100 g of butter

1 egg

2 olive oil spoons

2 milk spoons

150 ml of warm water

The steps

Pour the flour into a bowl. Add the butter and egg into the mix. Start mixing everything up and then add both the oil and milk spoons. Dissolve the salt into the warm water and start stirring the mix into a soft and elastic dough.

Pour some extra flour into your counter and roll it over till it is all in one piece.

Put it all into the bowl again and into the fridge for a couple of hours.

For the filling

2.2 pounds of ground beef

2 onions

1.1 pounds of green onions

1 red pepper

6 hard boiled eggs

Salt and pepper

The steps

Put the onions into a big pot filled up with water. When its color begins to switch to a more golden like color, add the ground beef, the peppers and any other spices you would like.

Keep it in the stove till the beef is fully cooked.

Put all of the mix into a bowl and add the hard boiled eggs cut out in little pieces.

Let it rest in the fridge for about 3 more hours.

Getting it ready

Pour some flour on to your counter again and spread the dough with a roller so that it's about an inch high. Cut it in circles of about 6 inches in diameter.

Add one tablespoon of the filling into the circles

Put some water into the edge of the circles and seal them by pressing them together. (You can use a fork to help you out)

You can either fry them in a pan or put to the oven till they golden and cooked.

Let them sit for just a minute into a paper towel so it absorbs the oil left.

Filling can vary, and you can even create new ones according to your favorite foods.
