Samsung Chromebook – Free to a good home

A few months back I won a Samsung Chromebook form gogo. I really wanted to love it, hoping that it would be a great option for a lightweight travel computer device. Sadly, however, it isn’t powerful enough to handle the day-to-day needs I have. It is great as a web browser but not much more and, well, I need more than that.

The top is slightly scuffed from having been in my bag for a month or so; otherwise it is essentially brand new. It comes with a subscription to Verizon Wireless for some free data service if you happen to be outside of wifi range. I think it also gets some free gogo sessions and maybe extra Google Drive space for free. I never used any of those premium features so you can register them all in your name. I’ll even toss in a protective sleeve if I can find one that fits it well in my collection here.

So, who wants to take this off my hands?

USA shipping addresses only, please. I’m not willing to deal with the customs paperwork of shipping it further afield.

I’ll drop it in the mail to a random commenter shortly after noon EST on Monday, December 30, 2013.

  1. I’m going to Swaziland in February to work in the hospital for a month. I would greatly appreciate having some portable computer access.

  2. I’d be willing to take it off your hands. My home computer just died after 6 years andI was cconsidering a chromebook

  3. I’d love this! I’ve been needing a new laptop, as my previous one recently died and I’ve been relying far too heavily on my iPhone.

  4. I would love to have this notebook as I am in the market for something portable to work on. Thanks!

  5. Perfect for what I need. I have a heavy 17″ power laptop that I carry on trips because that’s the only one I have. This will make my checkin so much lighter.

    Fyi-i live in nyc. πŸ™‚

  6. I’ve been looking for a computer just like this for my kids. We would definitely put this to good use!

  7. I’m sure you won’t have any problem getting rid of it anybody would love to have it. Thanks for the nice gesture.

  8. Considering I’m currently in the market for one, I’d gladly take it! πŸ™‚ My previous one didn’t quite make it through peace corps service!

  9. Very generous… and I would love to take it from your hands, mostly intended for my daughter in her backpack when we travel.
I can even send you a UPS shipping label. πŸ˜‰

  10. Very generous offer Seth. I’d love to try out the Chromebook and if I’m randomly selected, I’d be more than happy to pass it on to yet another reader after testing it out for a trip.

Regardless…would love to chat with you about tech options for travel. I’ve been rotating between carrying my (old) laptop or iPad during travel and have found neither fits my needs well. I like the idea of a Chromebook rather than carrying a more expensive/lightweight laptop but am afraid I’d also find it falls short.

  11. Seth, I am currently in Afghanistan serving with the Marines here at Camp Leatherneck. I sure could use it to communicate with my wife and kids. If you mail it to my wife in VA, she can mail it to me. Thanks!

  12. I’m a professional tour guide who is always on the go, and I would love this to replace my heavy laptop!

  13. I’m happy to take it off your hands. I can use it for work which is mostly researching on the internet and writing.

  14. Been using nothing but my iphone for over 8 months now. Would greatly appreciate another way to get things done.

  15. Hi Seth

Thanks for your post about your Chromebook. I’d love to take this laptop off your hands. If I’m selected, I will immediately send your my shipping address in NYC. Happy New Year.

  16. I would love a simple web browser for travel (and just at home sometimes)! The heavy, large laptop now just isn’t practical sometimes…

  17. My wife could really use this at her school. She is a 3rd grade teacher and has a very limited budget for technology which is needed. Thanks for the generosity!

  18. I’d love to take it off you! Sister is headed to college so I’m sure it will come in very handy!

  19. I will give it a good home, keep it clean and fully charged when not in use. I also have a fenced in yard but not sure that matters.

  20. My wife is retiring and, thus, losing her laptop. Her computing needs won’t be as demanding now, so a Chromebook would work just fine for her. I’d love to be able to surprise her with this.

  21. My mother-n-law has been looking for something for my father-n-law. I think this would be great for him. I’ll gladly take it off your hands to give it to him

  22. I have a chromebook and it does have limitations but is awesome for taking with you because it’s so light. My daughter would love one to take to school to connect to their wifi there for projects, etc. They are much cheaper than many tablets and sturdier.

  23. I’m heading to South Africa next year and this is just the thing I’ve been looking for! What a nice holiday gesture πŸ™‚

  24. I would love to have it for my son who is returning to college next week. So very generous of you for offering it to a reader.

  25. My son didn’t quite get a lump of coal for Christmas, but more like the socks and underwear type of gifts. He has no hope of getting a laptop for school until possibly his birthday in April (which would require a co-pay on his part-no job at the moment, however). Winning your laptop would solve many family issues and possibly get him past the slacker phase and into a real student.
    An eternally hopeful mom…

  26. I’d love it! My iPad isn’t enough for most trips, but don’t want to carry my full work laptop either.

  27. My laptop is about to die and I was going to replace it with a desktop and a chrome book, so this would definitely be a great addition!

  28. Wow! How generous of you to share! Hopefully I will win this practical computer and Karma will be good to you!

    Thanks and Happy New Year!

  29. This is a cool giveaway and very timely, need one badly and this would do wonders man. Thanks for the opportunity Seth!

  30. I’d love to take it off your hands. My old light travel laptop just died 3 weeks ago and I’ve been meaning to go out and get a new one!

  31. Please please my daughter lost hers on a plane. Somehow, someone took her backpack as we were deplaning.

  32. I am becoming more n more a fan of the google suite, started using Chromecast and think its awesome. Would love a Chromebook, thanks!

  33. I would love to give it a good home and will take it my travels in2014 so I can keep up with your blog

  34. This is really nice Seth. If I got this I would give it away to my father in law who has been in the hospital and needs a way to keep in touch with the world!

  35. My sister is starting college on her own and she has never owned a computer. This would be a great help to her.

  36. I really could use it. My ’05 Vaio lacks the power and memory for all the work on the Interwebs that I do!

  37. Know it’s not the comment you were expecting but I know two amazing charities over there who give hope to kids in hospital with life threatening illnesses. I’m sure there is a young boy or girl in hospital who could really use the distraction and love a pre-loved computer. Good PR too.

  38. Happy to take it too! I live in NYC so can also meet up with you instead of mailing it! Thanks πŸ™‚

  39. Know it’s not the post you’re expecting but the charity below deals with making the lives of children with life threatening illnesses better. They did loads for us when we were in hospital. I’m sure they could find a young girl or boy in hospital who would love the distraction of a pre-loved computer to spend their time on. It’s really hard for kids to occupy all that time without getting bored. Good pr and will make you feel good too!

  40. I’d love to win YOUR Chromebook. Who knows where it’s been. My netbook is so old and outdated, it takes MINUTES just to close pages, and even more to shut it down. And I don’t own any schmancy tablet-things.

Happy 2014 and safe travels to you and your +1.

  41. Geez, I was looking at tablets for Christmas but didn’t purchase. Must have been that the price wasn’t quite right. Slightly used sounds great to me and thank you for your generosity to the group.

  42. Would love to have it. My laptop is having some issues. The Chromebook would work for me because I don’t need computing power. I surf and watch content on my laptop.

  43. I would happily take this in order to browse the Internet and discover more travel/ savings/ points tips!

  44. Happily!!! I’ve used so much info from your site and this would be just one more awesomely helpful piece πŸ™‚

  45. I have a daughter starting her professional career that could definitely put it to good use. Thank you for your generosity, and have a special 2014!

  46. It would be great if I won it. I could replace my 2007 Dell with Windows Vista. Now THAT is heavy!

  47. I want to love the Chromebook too. I’m trying to decide now between the Microsoft Surface and the Chromebook and this would certainly tip the scales. Thank you!

  48. I’d love to take it off of your hands to take to Brazil next month – our neighbor’s housekeeper there would adore it; she was sold into slavery when she was a girl, worked all her life serving other people, but still managed to teach herself to read and is the most cheerful person I have ever met (true story). It would be a wonderful gift for her.

  49. I would absolutely love to get the Chromebook! It would be the perfect travel companion for my needs (I’m not much of a techie, LOL), allowing me to follow the latest posts of your blog while enabling access to travel booking portals, etc. on a bigger screen than a cell phone.

  50. I would love to have this for my 120k miles I have booked for 2014 already (including a 4-segment 30hour DCA-SIN trip in 2 weeks)!

  51. I had the original Google CR-48 before. It was fun at first. Couple weeks later it is much slower to an extend that it is no longer fun to use. Chrome book is a great idea, but not as good as it looks like.

  52. I will take it off your hands. My girlfriend will love it. Exactly what she needs for here hectic school and work.

  53. This would find a great home with me. A basic cloud docs machine and web enabled device would be a nice simple travel companion

  54. I would love to give this to my daughter that has an unfixable laptop so she would stop calling me in the middle of the night to do searches for her.

  55. Would LOVE to take it off your hands! My grandmother was just in car accident and can’t sit upright for long periods of time, so can’t acccess her desktop computer… she needs a laptop to stay in touch.

  56. I could definitely use this. It would be perfect for taking notes in my PhD classes and having it would mean that I wouldn’t have to schelp my old laptop back and forth on my bike to school.

  57. I would love to take it off your hands! I am somewhat OCD so it’ll go to a good home for sure in terms of care for it!

  58. Would love a freebie for my mom. She’s just learning to use social media. I can even pick it up since I’m from NYC. No need to mail it πŸ™‚

  59. I could be a good home for this. Considering that I spend a considerable amount of time on the road, I love how light the Chromebook is!

  60. Me! Me! Me! I just started grad school and need a smaller tablet as a reference guide while I am in clinic! The Chromebook would be PERFECT!

  61. My notebook was just diagnosed as needing a new motherboard and daughterboard. I’d gladly take this off your hands.

  62. I’d give it a try on my Trip to Arizona at the end of January! Anything to get away from the cold weather in Minnesota.

  63. Seth, your generosity is admirable. I’d love to be considered for random selection.

  64. My wife would be thrilled to have something like this! As a matter of fact I would be too. Maybe I wouldn’t tell her.

  65. I’d love this, I’m starting my first year of college mid January and this could definitely be useful to write notes in lectures, write down my essays and not have to worry about losing any of them since it syncs online. It would also replace my 8 year old desktop. You’d make this student extremely happy and ready for success!

  66. I would love to take the Chromebook off your hands! It would make a great replacement for my heavy, oversized Toshiba.

  67. My son is in desperate need of a new laptop. His current one is literally held together with Super Glue and a few bolts and nuts that weren’t original equipment. If I win, I’ll be sure to buy you a drink or five the next time we cross paths again!

  68. I can certainly give it a good home. No shipping necessary, just an extra trip through ORD security.

  69. This senior citizen would appreciate having a chromebook for bucket list travel adventures. Thanks for yoru consideration.

  70. i would love to win. i could really use it my old laptop is giving out on me and this could be a great replacement. Good luck everyone!

  71. I’d love one. I can’t use my work computer for personal things, so I end up carrying two laptops with me everywhere. Since I don’t need anything more advanced than a web browser, the Chromebook would suit me well. And making my laptop bag lighter would be a big win for me.

  72. Would be great – especially if some of your great travel insight and enthusiasm got rubbed off on it!

  73. I’d like to suggest donating it to the Winston-Salem NC Street School, which provides a place for students who didn’t complete high school to return and get their degree. A more impactful solution than will impact lives rather than another gadget in our bag that won’t make a difference in our lives πŸ™‚

  74. I am a retired teacher and would love it for travels. I’m going to Kyrgyzstan and Armenia in the spring.

  75. I’m currently in the market for a Chromebook to take with me on what I call “The Adventure”–a full time travel odyssey that will not just include postings of where I’ve been but how I’m utilizing one bag/light travel throughout.

A Chromebook would be perfect for my needs. I’d be happy to let my readers know how I got the device and encourage them to come to your site.

I’ll also be happy to pay any shipping charges you might incur.

  76. December 30th is actually my birthday! It would be very cool to receive this as a birthday present…
And thanks for the generous giveaway!

  77. My 13 year old son could put it to good use, his hand me down laptop for schoolwork is really tired.

  78. What an awesome giveaway! I have an elderly friend who is using an ancient hand-me-down desktop computer. This would be a great upgrade for her.

  79. ooh! if i was really lucky this could arrive before my late january travel … thanks for the opportunity!

  80. That is one generous offer.
I will be happy to use this laptop, it will certainly help me a lot.
    Thanks!

  81. Hi Seth, it would be nice if you gave it to Steven B the marine serving in Afghanistan who posted above, a man serving his country in this wild world called Afghanistan while we are all comfortable over here, he deserves it much more than some tour guide or somebody’s son or daughter going to college or—.
Steven B , if you did not win and still need one ill be glad to send you a brand new Sony notebook I received as a gift from my daughter.

  82. This would be perfect for my wife to help satiate her appetite for surfing Perez Hilton at every opportunity. Thanks in advance!

  83. Oh, my dying son’s last wish was to have his poor old parents give him a slightly scuffed but usable Chromebook. But his parents are alcoholics and don’t have two pennies to rub together – and even a lump of coal is too expensive! So pretty please with cherries on top let me satisfy my son’s last dying wish!

Is that enough of a sob story to win?

  84. Please, please, please pick me! I could totally use this and I didn’t get one for christmas. Thanks!

  85. In addition to the Chromebook’s utility for my travels, December 30th happens to be my birthday (I can provide DOB proof if requested). This would make for a wonderful start to my 31st year.

  86. Happy New Year and may you have a great 2014 plus. Isn’t flying on points a great hobby. You are very generous.

  87. I would love to be the lucky winner to take this in my next free award trip to Asia!!! Thanks!!!

  88. Looks like my chances are slim…but this would be great for my parents. I live abroad now, so we could use it to Skype and e-mail (they have laptops, but they are ooold) πŸ™‚ PS – Great idea and thanks for paying it forward!

  89. Happy New Year everyone. What a nice offering. I believe the Chromebook will work with chromecast so I am in for video streaming (and web browsing). Thanks.

  90. Hi Seth! University is starting soon. With most of my money going to tuition and books, I don’t have enough to get myself a decent school laptop, just have a sluggish desktop as old as the dinosaurs. The chromebook would definitely fit my needs in classes for taking down notes, essays, working in and out of class, using google’s version of powerpoint for presentations and working on homework. Since it syncs to the cloud I will never lose any of my work. If you decide to pick me you can even sign the bottom for me! I would be really grateful for your contribution in helping me out with my education!

  91. Well, since nobody else seems to want it, I could probably find some use for it. Thanks for offering.

  92. Thanks for the kind offer! I could use a casual device in the living room to surf on while the TV is on, or in the kitchen for cooking. This fits the bill!

  93. I can probably put this to good use for those quick things to do online instead of turning on my desktop.

  94. I am definitely looking for a free chromebook and can make a very good use while travel…pick me…pick me…i can also cover shipping charges…

  95. This would be really useful to replace a nearly 10-year-old laptop that can’t even be used for web browsing.

  96. I would pretend that there’s a noble purpose to which I’d put this to use, but really, I’d probably just use it to browse ESPN, Twitter and other things that people would call time-wasters. So, pick me please. πŸ˜‰

  97. My mom needs a new laptop. Hers is ancient. I’d love to take it off your hands and give it to her. Thanks.

  98. I would love to take it off your hands. I have been contemplating getting to test out. Thanks for the chance!
