Oscars 2018: 9 fabulously over-the-top red carpet looks

Maeve McDermott

On Sunday's toned-down Academy Awards red carpet, which was dominated by shades of neutrals, it was a delight to see the few stars who attempted more daring looks. From Adam Rippon's bondage-inspired tux and Whoopi Goldberg's peacock splendor to St. Vincent's "no pants, no problem" ethos, these were the weird and wonderful fashions that made the Oscars red carpet slightly less beige this year.

Adam Rippon

In the words of Rihanna, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but chains and whips excite me."

Clad in a Moschino suit and a leather harness, the Olympics breakout star was easily the most extra character on the red carpet this year, and bless him for it.

Jordan Peele

Does Jordan Peele's pin count as a spoiler?

Look closely, and you'll see that Peele's lapel pin, a custom design by Jason of Beverly Hills, is a bloody set of antlers, a hilariously specific reference to his nominated movie Get Out

St. Vincent

No pants no problem.

Before joining Sufjan Stevens to perform his nominated song Mystery of Love on the Oscars stage, St. Vincent presented us with this red carpet look from Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello. The real mystery? Where her other sleeve went.

Salma Hayek

Shining, shining, shining, shining.

Hayek usually opts for form-fitting bombshell gowns on red carpets, so her over-the-top, sequins-layered-with-diamonds Oscars look was an entertaining change for the star, who wore a Gucci gown and a set of jewels worth more than most mortgages.

James Ivory

"I have loved you for the last time..."

The 89-year-old Call Me By Your Name screenwriter became an instant style icon Sunday night with his Oscars shirt, imprinted with the face of Timothee Chalamet crying during the movie's final scene.

Maya Rudolph

Lady in red.

Looking like the evening's hottest cult member, Rudolph walked the Oscars red carpet in a long-sleeve, high-neck caftan that was bold in its modestly.

Andra Day

Oscars mood.

The Oscar-nominated singer's Zac Posen gown was vaguely reminiscent of a floral couch, but it's hard to critique her impeccable red carpet posing.

Ruffles on ruffles.

Agnés Varda

Tied with Ivory for the night's oldest nominee, Agnés Varda — nominated for best documentary for Faces Places — paired rosy glasses with a floral Gucci loungewear set for an exercise in daring Oscars look. Every actress who showed up wearing eggshell white Sunday ought to take note.

A look!

Whoopi Goldberg

Peacock queen.

Goldberg is a queen no matter what she wears. And leave it to Whoopi to break out a billowing technicolor Christian Siriano gown for the Oscars, complete with a pair of black sunglasses.
