The City of Festivals has a new celebration coming to town.

Milwaukee's inaugural Hip-Hop Week MKE was approved unanimously Tuesday by the Common Council.

Hip-Hop Week MKE, which is expected to run from August 27 to September 2, is planned as a citywide celebration of hip-hop culture.

"In August, Milwaukee will experience the true power and influence of hip-hop," said Ald. Khalif Rainey, the lead sponsor of the proposal to create the event.

He said the week-long celebration will focus on health, financial literacy, and civic engagement. Rainey is still looking for sponsors and community partners to help plan the event.

The proposal now heads to Mayor Tom Barrett for his approval.
