Camp report: Hernán Pérez, Ji-Man Choi power Brewers in 5-1 victory over Diamondbacks

On the field: Hernán Pérez and Ji-Man Choi combined for four hits and drove in all five of the Brewers' runs in a 5-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick.

Pérez had a pair of doubles and three RBI, with his first two-bagger in the second inning off Zack Greinke getting Milwaukee in front to stay. Choi then added a two-run homer in the seventh to give the Brewers some breathing room.

Two veterans vying for the rotation, Yovani Gallardo and Wade Miley, pitched for the first time. Gallardo pitched a scoreless inning, although he walked two, and Miley went two scoreless innings with two walks and two strikeouts.

It was Gallardo's first time on the mound for the Brewers since 2014 and though it was only exhibition play, he said, "I was excited, maybe too excited. It was nice to get back out there, for the first time, being a Brewer again."

Jhoulys Chacín, who pitched a scoreless inning and earned the victory in his first start, said he is concentrating on improving his changeup, with encouragement from pitching coach Derek Johnson.

Cactus juice: Since taking over as manager, Craig Counsell has downplayed the construction of his lineups. When it comes to spring training, he cautions against reading too much into them even more.

"I really haven't thought of that stuff," said Counsell, who utilized 123 different lineups in 2017. "I'd say general thoughts, but I haven't gotten specific in those thoughts yet. So don't read anything into the spring-training lineups.

"A lot of times they really are structured around sharing at-bats and getting appropriate at-bats."
