OSU professor named international certified crop advisor of the year

Ohio State associate professor and field specialist Harold Watters has been named the International Certified Crop Advisor of the Year.

Watters works directly with farmers, crop advisors, and extension educators to research and determine best crop production practices.

He tells Brownfield he was honored, and a little surprised, to learn he had received the award.

“It’s a great honor and I think this reflects well on the program we have here in Ohio, not just because of me, but because of a whole big team we have here,” he says.

The award by the American Society of Agronomy recognizes outstanding contributions to agronomy through education, service, and research.

In addition to helping farmers improve their yield, Watters is constantly encouraging younger generations to get involved in the industry.

“I was worried and still am worried about where we’re going to be in 40-50 years,” he says. “We need more young agronomists and it almost feels like there is a generation we missed because agriculture wasn’t so pretty or popular for awhile. But, we do have more younger folks interested today than the past 15 years and I want to encourage more.”

Watters spoke to Brownfield at the Ohio Agribusiness Association conference in Ohio.

He will be recognized at Commodity Classic in Anaheim at the end of the month.
