The shootings in Anderson that left police dealing with two crime scenes, one on Washington Street and one on Railroad Street, are apparently the result of a single attempted robbery gone wrong, Capt. Mike Aikens said Thursday.

The men shot each other, Aikens said.

Aikens said it appears that one man tried to rob another man who lives in Washington Homes, a public-housing apartment complex on Washington Street. It happened just before 9 p.m. Tuesday.

"It appears that when the robbery was taking place, the robbery victim reached for a gun and the robber had a gun as well," Aikens said. "They shot each other, but we don't know yet who got off the first shot."

After the men were each wounded, one of them ran to a home Railroad Street about two-tenths of a mile away.

The first 911 call about a shooting came from Railroad Street, and then a second one came from Washington Street. In the minutes after the calls came in, police initially thought they had separate incidents.

Both men remained at AnMed Health Medical Center in stable condition on Thursday, and their identities have not been made public. Aikens said police had been unable to interview the men by early Thursday because they remained heavily medicated.
